A very sad, farewell sale.

Whyte Avenue's well-known carrier of all things adorable and Canadian is closing its doors after eight years of outfitting the City's women in eclectic and unique pieces from our nation's best designers. This is a sad day. Nokomis is closing.

Treading water as an independent shop owner is terribly hard in today's sea of big-time retailers. Huge stores like Forever 21 and H&M offer unbeatable prices in huge spaces with endless selection. Small businesses have struggled to compete, and unfortunately it all comes down to cost. People are no longer willing to pay $100 for a dress when they can go to the mall and pay $30 even though they know it was probably made in a sweatshop... Many of us just can't afford it even if we strongly believe in supporting our local businesses and designers.

This is a complex subject and I'm not going to get into it any further. I want to focus on supporting Nokomis and the one good thing to come out of this... SALE!!

Everything in Nokomis is on sale from 30 - 50% off. So get your well-dressed booty in there before everything is gone and your left with nothing but an empty hanger to clutch onto.  And when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING, including the sweet, green, vintage couch that many a boyfriend has sat patiently on waiting for his lady to finish twirling in front of the mirror.
I received this news via the Nokomis newsletter, written by owner Jessica Kennedy, this morning:

So long, farewell.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that Nokomis Clothing will be closing its doors at the end of January 2011. After eight years of having the privilege of providing Edmontonians with Canadian designed and produced clothing and accessories, it is time to close the chapter. Economics are, of course, the reason for our departure.

I want to thank each and every customer we have ever had. Your loyalty, support and to be frank, purchases, has made the world of difference in my life. I have had the ability to live my dream: to be an entrepreneur, just like my own grandfathers. Thank you for this opportunity. I am blessed to have worked with so many amazing designers: you have inspired our entire community. And thank you to all the noko girls: you'll always be my family.

Meanwhile, you know how much I LOVE sales! We're going to be having a doozy of one. Currently, select merchandise is 30-50% off at the shop, and more deals will be found starting Boxing Day. Stay tuned.

I'm putting a call out to all of you who have something special you purchased from Nokomis. Email a photo to dressmedearly{at} of you looking fabulous with your Nokomis purchase, and I'll post it on the blog as a tribute to the beautiful store with the big heart that will be greatly missed.

  1. Oh nooooo! I love this store. They once sponsored an outfit for me for an opening.
They should come out to Van. There are tons of independent clothing stores here, though I can imagine how hard it is for them to.

  2. That's too bad! I'm sorry to hear this. I loved their clothes but could never afford them unfortunately.

  3. Okay this makes me sad...I was planning on visiting in a few weeks when I came home. BUMMER!
