Hayley Tomich is the epitome of a model. Standing almost six feet tall, the lean, fresh-faced 17 year-old is at the start of a very promising career. Discovered only four months ago walking in downtown Leduc, Hayley is now signed with Mode Models Edmonton and has walked in four runway shows during Western Canada Fashion Week this fall. Two of those shows included high profile local designers Malorie Urbanovitch and Genette Salgado.
"Fashion Week is important to Edmonton because we have lots of local, upcoming designers that have to be noticed and recognized for their work," says Hayley. "I think we can all appreciate the fact that Edmonton supports Western Canada Fashion Week because we have so many talented designers."
It's rare for a model to have the opportunity to walk in a runway show just four months into her career and Hayley doesn't hesitate to show her appreciation for the opportunity.
"To me it's fun! It's a great way to gain modeling experience, meet great people, learn more about fashion and really get a good insight about the designers from this area."
Hayley knows modeling is an extremely competitive industry and with such a small pool of opportunities in Edmonton, models have to be at the top of their game to earn both local and coveted international contracts.
"You have to be easy to work with," explains Hayley, "Patience is also important. Sometimes casting calls and call times are pushed to a later time - you always have to be organized and keep track of your schedule because times change frequently. You have to be creative and diverse with your looks. And of course, keep in shape by exercising and eating healthy."
And the secret to a good runway walk?
"A good walking tip I was taught: If it feels awkward, you're probably doing it right. You want to lean your upper body back and keep your hips forward." Well, I definitely have the awkward part down...
"And to prepare for the shows I usually practice my walk quite a few times. Especially in the shoes I'll be wearing for the show. It helps me to relax so I don't panic when getting on the runway."
As they say, practice makes perfect, and Hayley's positive attitude and ambition is sure to take her far.
