The beauty of crowdfunding is that it allows consumers to easily and directly fund local businesses, becoming a part of that business's success and celebrating in its newest offerings. Edmonton boutique Bamboo Ballroom is trying its hand at the model, collaborating with online crowdfunding platform, Alberta Boostr to raise $8,000 for an online store. We celebrated the launch of the campaign last week with a fun little soiree at Bamboo's home, nestled in Old Strathcona.

An e-commerce site is an exciting step for any small business, but it's especially significant in this case. Bamboo is one of the largest carriers of Edmonton designers in the city, meaning an online store brings Edmonton designers to a global audience. Currently, the boutique sells almost 20 Edmonton-owned brands. With the launch of an e-commerce site, customers can shop large international brands such as Mink Pink and Gentle Fawn while also shopping their favourite Edmonton designers such as Suka, Serendipity and Amor jewelry from home.

The beauty of the Alberta Boostr model, is you aren't just donating. You are rewarded for your support. As a contributor you purchase a "reward" for yourself and that purchase contributes to Bamboo Ballroom's overall fundraising goal. You can purchase a $50 Bamboo gift certificate for only $40, or a more exclusive item such as a custom-made Suka dress (only $115). Each purchase takes Bamboo Ballroom one step closer to launching their site and our local designers to an international audience. Something we can all get behind.
